About the role

The QC Technician I prepares and tests samples from blood components to determine if the products meet established quality control standards. This is a team-oriented position requiring strong communication skills, adaptability, self-motivation and collaboration within a positive work environment.

Responsibilities

The role involves two main areas of responsibility:

  • Sample Preparation and Testing: 70% of the role, including preparing platelet samples, performing bacterial contamination testing, entering and documenting test results, collecting and preparing red blood cell products, and conducting CLIA moderate complexity proficiency testing.
  • Laboratory Support: 30% of the role, including performing routine instrument maintenance, monitoring laboratory inventory levels, assisting with laboratory projects and validation activities, and supporting the review and maintenance of standard operating procedures.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience: At least one year of prior job-related laboratory experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Certifications / Licenses: None

Skills

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents, communicate effectively with staff and clients
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, compute percentages and volumes
  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
  • COMPUTER LITERATE: Microsoft Office, BECS (blood established computer software)

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently exposed to blood and blood components, biohazard materials, moving mechanical parts, and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Requirements: The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk; occasionally required to sit, climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.

Schedule

Sun – Thurs 10:00am -6:30pm, full-time, must be regularly available to work at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week. Must be available and willing to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as necessary to meet business needs.
