About the Role
This position involves providing emergency services to the public by answering 911 calls, dispatching appropriate personnel and equipment, and offering initial incident command support until emergency units arrive on scene.
Responsibilities
- Answer emergency 911 calls and respond with appropriate personnel and equipment.
- Provide initial incident command support until responding emergency units arrive.
- Conduct caller interrogation to determine the nature and specifics of the emergency.
- Identify the nature of the emergency, assess the required level of response based on local protocols, and relay information to responding units.
- Monitor computerized fire alarm systems and other alarm systems, such as the Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (IDIDS).
- Maintain accurate status of all emergency response equipment and personnel to ensure prompt and accurate response.
- Operate Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system, telephones, radios, and station alert systems.
- Provide emergency medical dispatching assistance to callers with medical emergencies.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must demonstrate reasonable proficiency in Enhanced 911, CAD, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and station alerting software and equipment within 16 weeks of employment.
- Position is subject to shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with an uncommon tour of duty.
- Incumbent must work regardless of weather conditions or base closure and report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time (mission essential).
- May be required to wear a uniform.
- Must be a qualified typist (40 words per minute).
- Must pass a pre-employment fingerprint-based criminal history investigation for any location that accesses Criminal Justice Information Systems.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
- Must obtain and maintain certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Medical Dispatch based on program standards at the assigned location.
- Must complete the Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent based on program standards at the assigned location.
- Must complete State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification based on the assigned location.
- Must complete the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS 100, 300, 700, 800, and 907 courses. Continuous current certification is a condition of employment.
- Must attain continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training and pass in accordance with predetermined course requirements.
- Position may require a pre-employment drug screen, vision and hearing screening, and a T3/Secret clearance based on location requirements.
Qualifications
Open to U.S. citizens. To qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:
- Answering emergency and/or non-emergency calls for police, fire, medical, or ambulance assistance;
- Dispatching emergency personnel and vehicles; and
- Operating automated systems, emergency dispatching, and communications equipment.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level in the Federal service (GS-06).
Education may not be substituted for experience for this position.
