Public Safety Telecommunicator (Office Automation).

About the role

Provide emergency services to the public by answering emergency 911 calls and responding with appropriate personnel and equipment. Provide initial incident command support until responding emergency units arrive on scene. Identify nature of emergency, level of response required based on local protocols, and provide any additional information to the responding units. Monitor computerized fire alarm system and other alarm systems such as Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (IDIDS) alarm systems. Maintain an accurate status of all emergency response equipment and personnel to ensure prompt and accurate response. Operate Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system, telephones, radios, and station alert systems. Provide emergency medical dispatching assistance to callers with medical emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Answer emergency and non-emergency calls within a centralized public safety communications center using established procedures
• Operate emergency communications and computer-aided dispatch equipment to assist with dispatching public safety resources
• Monitor field unit response to relay incident updates to callers and/or responding public safety personnel
• Determine the level of emergency to dispatch appropriate police, fire or emergency medical assets using computer-aided dispatch capabilities
• Assist with performing crisis intervention with distraught callers

Requirements

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Within 16 weeks from the date of employment, will be required to demonstrate reasonable proficiency at locally established training guidelines on the use of Enhanced 911, CAD, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and station alerting software and equipment. Position is subject to shift work where the incumbent is required to work an alternate, rotating work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays). Incumbent is required to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions or base closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time. Incumbent may be required to wear a uniform.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

• GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes answering emergency and/or non-emergency calls, operating emergency communications and computer-aided dispatch equipment, and monitoring field unit response.
• GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes answering emergency and non-emergency calls, determining the level of emergency to dispatch appropriate police, fire or emergency medical assets, and assisting with performing crisis intervention with distraught callers.

This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Skills

• Must pass a pre-employment fingerprint based criminal history investigation for any location that accesses Criminal Justice Information Systems
• Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license
• Must obtain and maintain certification in: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Emergency Medical Dispatch, and Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent
• Must complete State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification and National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS 100, 300, 700, 800, and 907 courses
