About the Role

This position involves providing emergency services to the public by answering 911 calls, coordinating responses, and operating critical dispatch systems.

Responsibilities

  • Answer emergency 911 calls and dispatch appropriate personnel and equipment.
  • Provide initial incident command support until responding emergency units arrive.
  • Identify the nature of emergencies, determine the required response level based on local protocols, and relay information to responding units.
  • Monitor computerized fire alarm systems and other alarm systems, such as the Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (IDIDS).
  • Maintain accurate status of all emergency response equipment and personnel to ensure prompt and accurate response.
  • Operate Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) systems, telephones, radios, and station alert systems.
  • Provide emergency medical dispatching assistance to callers with medical emergencies.
  • Perform crisis intervention with distraught callers.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Within 16 weeks of employment, demonstrate proficiency in Enhanced 911, CAD, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and station alerting software and equipment.
  • Position requires shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Incumbent must work regardless of weather conditions or base closure and report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
  • May be required to wear a uniform.
  • Must pass a pre-employment fingerprint-based criminal history investigation for access to Criminal Justice Information Systems.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must obtain and maintain certifications in:
    • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
    • Emergency Medical Dispatch based on program standards at the assigned location.
    • Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent.
    • State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification.
    • National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS 100, 300, 700, 800, and 907 courses.
  • Continuous current certification is a condition of employment.
  • Must complete continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training.
  • Must obtain and maintain eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access; a background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Must type at least 40 words per minute with three or fewer errors based on a 5-minute sample.

GS-05

  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:
    • Receiving incoming calls for service and obtaining information to determine the appropriate course of action.
    • Using automated systems to enter, update, or maintain service records or other information.
  • Education: Four years of education above high school from an accredited business, secretarial, technical school, junior college, college, or university. (Transcripts required.)
  • Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used if the computed percentage meets 100% of the requirements.

GS-06

  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:
    • Answering emergency and/or non-emergency calls within a public safety communications center using established procedures.
    • Operating emergency communications/computer-aided dispatch equipment to assist with dispatching public safety resources.

GS-07

  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:
    • Answering emergency and non-emergency calls within a public safety communications center to dispatch appropriate police, fire, and emergency medical assets.
    • Monitoring automated fire/security alarms to coordinate public safety response.
    • Assisting with crisis intervention for distraught callers.

Foreign education must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs and deemed equivalent to a U.S. education program.
