About the Role

This position involves providing emergency services to the public by answering 911 calls, dispatching appropriate personnel and equipment, and supporting initial incident command until emergency units arrive.

Responsibilities

  • Answer emergency 911 calls and respond with appropriate personnel and equipment.
  • Provide initial incident command support until responding emergency units arrive on scene.
  • Conduct caller interrogation to determine the problem and nature of the call.
  • Identify the nature of the emergency, level of response required based on local protocols, and relay information to responding units.
  • Monitor computerized fire alarm systems and other alarm systems such as Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (IDIDS).
  • Maintain accurate status of all emergency response equipment and personnel to ensure prompt and accurate response.
  • Operate Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system, telephones, radios, and station alert systems.
  • Provide emergency medical dispatching assistance to callers with medical emergencies.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, including a completed background investigation and Secret Clearance.
  • Must demonstrate reasonable proficiency in E911, CAD, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and station alerting software and equipment within 16 weeks of employment.
  • Position is subject to shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with an uncommon tour of duty.
  • Incumbent must work regardless of weather conditions or base closure and report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
  • May be required to wear a uniform.
  • Must pass a pre-employment fingerprint-based criminal history investigation for access to Criminal Justice Information Systems.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must obtain and maintain certifications in:
    • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
    • Emergency Medical Dispatch based on program standards at the assigned location.
    • Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent.
    • State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification.
    • National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS 100, 300, 700, 800, and 907 courses.
  • Must complete continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training.
  • Pre-employment vision and hearing screenings are required.
  • Travel duty may be required up to 5% of the time.
  • Must pass a drug test.
  • Must be a qualified typist, able to type 40 words per minute with three or fewer errors based on a 5-minute sample.

To qualify, you must meet the following experience requirements:

  • One year of specialized experience which includes:
    • Answering emergency and/or non-emergency calls for police, fire, medical, or ambulance assistance.
    • Dispatching emergency personnel and vehicles.
    • Operating automated systems, emergency dispatching, and communications equipment.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level in the Federal service (GS-06).

Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).

Education cannot be substituted for experience for this job.
