About the Role
This position involves providing emergency services to the public by answering emergency 911 calls and coordinating the appropriate response with personnel and equipment. The role includes initial incident command support, monitoring alarm systems, maintaining accurate status of emergency resources, and operating various dispatch systems.
Responsibilities
- Answer emergency 911 calls and dispatch appropriate personnel and equipment.
- Provide initial incident command support until responding emergency units arrive on scene.
- Identify the nature of the emergency, determine the level of response required based on local protocols, and relay information to responding units.
- Monitor computerized fire alarm systems and other alarm systems such as Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (ICIDS).
- Maintain an accurate status of all emergency response equipment and personnel to ensure prompt and accurate response.
- Operate Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system, telephones, radios, and station alert systems.
- Provide emergency medical dispatching assistance to callers with medical emergencies.
- Perform crisis intervention with distraught callers as needed.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Within 16 weeks of employment, demonstrate reasonable proficiency in E911, CAD, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and station alerting software and equipment.
- Position is subject to shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Required to work regardless of weather conditions or base closure and report to the duty station at the scheduled time.
- May be required to wear a uniform.
- Must pass a pre-employment fingerprint-based criminal history investigation for locations accessing Criminal Justice Information Systems.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
- Must obtain and maintain certifications in:
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
- Emergency Medical Dispatch based on program standards at the assigned location.
- Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent based on program standards.
- State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification based on assigned location.
- National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS 100, 300, 700, 800, and 907 courses.
- Continuous current certification is a condition of employment.
- Responsible for attaining continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training.
- Must obtain and maintain eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- This is a drug-testing designated position; drug testing is mandatory prior to placement and randomly thereafter.
- This position is designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization.
- Must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to sustain base operations during mobilization.
- Typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute (WPM) based on a 5-minute sample with 3 or fewer errors.
Qualifications
Open to US Citizens. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, transcripts will be required.
Specialized Experience Required
- At the GS-05 Level: One year of specialized experience which includes:
- Assisting with obtaining basic information from callers in a centralized public safety communications center.
- Entering routine incident information into an automated system.
- At the GS-06 Level: One year of specialized experience which includes:
- Answering emergency and/or non-emergency calls within a centralized public safety communications center using established procedures.
- Operating emergency communications and computer-aided dispatch equipment to assist with dispatching public safety resources.
- Relaying incident updates to callers and/or responding public safety personnel.
- At the GS-07 Level: One year of specialized experience which includes:
- Answering emergency and non-emergency calls within a centralized public safety communications center.
- Determining the level of emergency to dispatch appropriate police, fire, or emergency medical assets using computer-aided dispatch capabilities.
- Assisting with performing crisis intervention with distraught callers.
Foreign education must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs to be deemed equivalent to a U.S. education program.

Pay
Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement. Grade progression for this position is GS-05/GS-06/GS-07. Salary negotiations may be authorized for candidates new to federal service.
