About the role
Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) seeks three (3) experienced, dynamic, capable, creative, and caring individuals to join its team. The college is a multi-campus institution serving nearly 9,000 students annually and is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system.
Responsibilities
- Receives emergency and non-emergency calls from the public.
- Communicates emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio communications for the Public Safety Department.
- Records and routes incoming telephone and radio calls.
- Dispatches campus security and law enforcement personnel by using radio.
- Maintains radio contact with officers on assignments.
- Informs supervisors and officers of current situations.
- Disseminates information to the public and responds to inquiries.
- Maintains a written log or computer system database detailing incidents, investigations, and routine activities in the Public Safety Department.
- Maintains radio contact with officers on assignments.
- Monitors the status of alarms and doors on the Public Safety control panel and operates the computer-controlled locking and unlocking of doors on campus.
- Directs people who come to the Public Safety Department for information to the proper resources.
- Provides field personnel information as required.
- Trains new personnel in the operation of dispatching equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of communications equipment and work areas.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or possession of a New York State high school equivalency diploma.
- Pass a fingerprint background check, medical exam including a hearing test, and a Psychological/Personality assessment in accordance with NYS Title 21, section 5201.
- Good knowledge of radio dispatching techniques and equipment.
- Good knowledge of computer terminals and telephone switchboards.
- Good knowledge of the geography of the college campus.
- Good knowledge of computer skills with general knowledge of Windows.
- Able to communicate clearly in writing and orally.
- Able to use a radio as a communication device.
- Able to maintain records and reports.
- Able to follow oral and written instructions.
- Able to write legibly.
- Able to perform calmly and efficiently in emergency situations.
- Able to deal courteously with the public.
- Good judgment and mental alertness.
- Dependable.
- Good telephone skills.
- Good physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Qualifications
- Candidates must have been legal residents of New York State for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the test.
- Pursuant to subdivision 4a of Sec. 23 of the Civil Service Law, preference may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the municipality to which the appointment is to be made for at least four months preceding the date of the written test.
