About the role

This is a part-time position working approximately 20 hours per week. The Public Desk Assistant provides customer service at two of our public service desks, assessing and fulfilling patrons’ needs for information and materials, and maintaining departmental procedures and policies. The role requires good organizational and communication skills, flexibility, and the ability to work in a team environment.

Schedule

The schedule for this position requires flexibility and is as follows:

  • Mondays: 5:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.
  • Tuesdays: 5:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.
  • Wednesdays: 5:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.
  • Fridays: 12:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m.
  • Weekend rotation (Saturdays: 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; Sundays: 9:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m. OR 11:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.)

Schedules are based on the needs of the library and may change as required.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $17.65–$21.18 per hour, based on skills and qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Provides reference services to patrons at the public service desks
  • Assists in providing technology and equipment assistance to patrons
  • Handles financial transactions and maintains cash drawer
  • Sets up equipment for library programs and public meetings
  • Manages study room reservations for patrons
  • Creates and maintains pillar displays
  • Keeps apprised of Library programs, policies and procedures, and building layout to assist patrons effectively
  • Participates in relevant training, continuing education, and/or professional development
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Ability to be a team player and work pleasantly and effectively with all patrons, staff, supervisors, and others
  • Ability to learn various job functions, perform them correctly, and understand their necessity in overall library operations
  • Ability to independently function efficiently in a changing and varied environment with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on details
  • Ability to follow all library policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates commitment to incorporating principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into everyday work

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent knowledge and skill in areas related to the responsibilities of the position
  • Customer service experience is required
  • Knowledge of e-material resources
