About the role

Be a part of a world-class academic health-care system at UChicago Medicine as a Project Manager in the Renovation & Construction Department. Represents the Hospital Facilities Planning Design and Construction Department while providing Project Management services for the development, design, construction, completion, and activation of University of Chicago Medical Center projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Project Management services for construction projects by managing cost, scope, schedule, resources, and risk.
  • Develop and document or assist in the intended scope, associated cost and schedule based on that scope and identify required internal and external resources required to deliver the scope.
  • Identify risks to project deliverables and develop mitigating strategies to avoid or minimize potential negative outcomes.
  • Manage and report variance according to developed plan.

  • Prepare requests for proposals, manage bid process, and make award recommendations for external resources.
  • Manage project design process, including reviewing design and construction documents for completeness, constructability, coordination of discipline and adherence to all UCM and regulatory agency guidelines; facilitating and performing value engineering; identifying and securing all resources, soliciting or preparing construction cost estimates; managing selection of consultants, vendors and contractors from request for proposal through contract negotiations and agreement.
  • Assist in or provide oversight into all project delivery activities, including support during planning and activation phases.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, understanding interdependencies and constrained resources.
  • Phase projects accordingly to meet client needs as they affect research, academic or patient care operations.
  • Serve as a technical resource to other project managers and Plant Department staff for infrastructure, Plant Operations, and renovation & construction activities.
  • Perform on-site supervision of construction phases by chairing owner-architect-contractor progress meetings to ensure the project is completed in a manner consistent with the contract documents and intended scope.
  • Assist in or provide project controls by monitoring and approving invoices and expenses.
  • Develop, manage, and update project schedules within identified software.
  • Develop project charters for scope identification and documentation.
  • Manage and document project issues and risks.
  • Provide change management by documenting alterations to project plan and maintaining up to date change logs.
  • Absorb and implement commissioning and turnover plans, including managing a punch list, submitting warranties/guarantees, providing system training, ensuring certificate of occupancy, and approving final contractor pay applications.
  • Perform other duties departmental duties as identified and assigned by senior management.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s Degree (Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or Project Management) or an equivalent amount of education/experience in these fields would be considered in lieu of a specific degree in the design or construction industry.
    • A minimum of 5 years in the construction or design industry providing significant project management experience with successfully executed projects.
    • Experience in managing scope, schedule, cost, risk, and resources in a capital project setting.
    • Experience managing projects in a healthcare environment including Infection Control protocols and mitigation strategies is strongly preferred.
    • Previous work in healthcare operations is preferred.
    • Requires experience analyzing construction cost and construction schedules, knowledge of the importance of data for troubleshooting construction problems and the ability to provide analysis (specific data) to answer questions.
    • Prior experience managing projects and working effectively in multidisciplinary groups is highly desirable.
    • Prior experience managing outside architects, engineers, and professional service firms.

    UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position. The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
