About the Role

Activity Specialists play an essential role in achieving the Boys & Girls Club of Central Illinois (BGCCIL) mission by serving as positive role models, mentors, and activity leaders to youth ages 6 to 18. They assist youth daily in acquiring developmental assets to achieve Academic Success, adopt a Healthy Lifestyle, and cultivate Good Character & Citizenship.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain communication between members, Activity Specialists, and the Central Unit Director.
  • Plan and oversee programs and activities supporting youth development outcomes in conjunction with the Central Unit Director.
  • Oversee proper record-keeping, including schedules and activity sheets.
  • Serve as a "floater" in the event of Activity Specialist absence.
  • Learn members' names and develop positive relationships with youth.
  • Implement fun, high-energy activities to maximize member participation.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and role modeling to members.
  • Support youth in following Club Rules and address discipline situations fairly and consistently.
  • Implement and assist with planning, evaluating, and modifying programs based on member needs and interests.
  • Maintain order and safety by enforcing rules and ensuring a clean, secure environment.
  • Ensure proper care of BGCCIL property (e.g., tables, computers, sports equipment).
  • Implement standard operating procedures for opening, running, and closing assigned program areas.
  • Assist with student completion and organization of school assignments during Power Hour.
  • Recruit and engage youth in activities, running them at scheduled times with high participation.
  • Address member discipline and conflict resolution in a fair, firm, and kind manner.
  • Foster positive youth development relationships, encouraging improvement and praising achievements.
  • Track daily attendance and program activities.
  • Maintain close contact with BGCCIL staff, volunteers, and members to interpret and explain organizational mission and objectives.
  • Maintain contact with community groups, schools, and parents to increase awareness and support for the club.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Knowledge of youth development and ability to motivate and guide youth through positive relationships.
  • Ability to relate to the public, parents, and members in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to convey BGCCIL policies and implement guidance and discipline.
  • Ability to organize and supervise members to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm, energy, and commitment in interactions with members, parents, and the public.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting and standing as needed.
  • Full use of all limbs and at least one hand.
  • Full verbal, color vision, and hearing ability.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Ability to intervene in conflicts involving youth aged 6 to 18.
  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle (preferred).

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions during all seasons (limited exposure in winter).
  • Exposure to moderate to loud noise and potentially unruly or irate youth/parents.
  • Potentially dangerous situations, including youth conflicts or unauthorized materials on premises.
  • Exposure to potentially dangerous medical situations, including airborne diseases or infected blood.
  • Risk of vehicle accidents while driving or riding in agency vehicles.
  • Risk of injury from athletic or recreational activities.
