Professor - Archaeologist (Open Rank)
About the Role
The Department of Anthropology at the University of Louisville seeks a tenure-track open-rank Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in Archaeology to serve as Director of the Center for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage. This position begins August 1, 2027, with a 50% administrative and 50% academic composition. The Center houses archaeological collections and laboratories for archaeological analyses.
The new Director will lead efforts to grow the Center as a long-lasting institution promoting archaeology through research, education, outreach, and advocacy. The role requires a strong record of fostering community engagement through archaeology and a commitment to developing future archaeologists.
Responsibilities
- Administer archaeological collections, laboratories, and database management
- Conduct Native American tribal consultation
- Organize exhibitions, public outreach, education, and internship programs
- Build partnerships with community organizations
- Secure grants and contracts
- Develop transdisciplinary projects and research
- Teach courses in archaeology and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
- Participate in departmental activities
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Anthropology or related field, completed by the time of appointment
- Administrative experience in collections, laboratory, and database management
- Experience with Native American tribal consultation
- Record of successful grants and contracts
- Research agenda that complements department strengths
- Teaching experience and commitment to mentoring students
