Product Safety Fellow

About the role

As a Technical Fellow within the Product Safety and Sustainability organization, you will serve as an RMS Discipline Chief for key business portfolios at Collins Aerospace. This role ensures consistent, compliant, and state-of-the-art safety engineering practices, drives harmonization of processes, tools, and training, and provides strategic oversight for major programs and discipline chiefs. You will lead resolution of critical safety issues, shape industry standards, partner with customers, and mentor engineers across the organization to advance and elevate the RMS discipline’s capabilities enterprise-wide.

Responsibilities

• Act as an RMS Discipline Chief for key business portfolio(s), ensuring technical quality and consistency, regulatory and customer specification compliance, application of lessons learned, and use of standard work and tools.
• Approve RMS plans and engage with programs during gate/milestone reviews.
• Contribute to the RMS Discipline Steering Council (DSC) to harmonize and standardize methods, training, and tools.
• Lead Working Groups for DSC-specific initiatives.
• Develop and instruct safety training within the RMS discipline and for engineers across engineering disciplines.
• Lead significant development and in-service safety issue resolution.
• Engage with customers to establish partnerships for shared success in RMS.
• Develop, harmonize, and maintain processes, training, and tools for the RMS discipline.
• Contribute to and lead key industry standards committees.
• Lead, develop, and provide oversight of RMS Discipline Chiefs and program leads in assigned portfolios.
• Mentor and coach the RMS organization as needed.
• Assess discipline gaps and enablers within portfolios; roadmap solutions and capabilities; and promote standard skills, practices, tools, and lessons learned across the discipline.
• Travel up to 25% domestically.

Requirements

• Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and a minimum of 10 years of experience.
• Experience and knowledge across aircraft systems.
• Experience performing safety assessment processes at aircraft, system, and product levels.
• Aircraft certification experience and experience working with aircraft OEMs and airworthiness authorities.
• Experience leading large teams of reliability, maintainability, and safety analysts.
• Application of 1309 regulations and guidance, ARP4761, ARP4754, and MIL-STD-882E.
• Experience in allocating, validating, and verifying safety requirements and assumptions for aircraft design, production, test, operation, and maintenance.
• Experience with CAFTA or similar Fault Tree analysis tools.
• Experience with engineering digital lifecycle management tools.
• Experience preparing and presenting technical information to peers, all levels of internal management, and external customers.
• Experience coordinating multiple projects and complex engineering activities while balancing priorities and schedules with key stakeholders.
• Knowledge of in-service safety standards (e.g., ARP5150) and continued airworthiness regulations, guidance, and analysis.
• Knowledge in the application of development assurance standards (e.g., DO-254, DO-178, DO-297) and applicable regulatory guidance.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with agile development principles.
• Experience with model-based development methods and tools.
• Experience with Design & Manufacturing Safety Management Systems (SMS) regulations, guidance, and practices.
• Experience with Human Factors, Information Security, and Environmental Qualification and their interfaces with the system safety assessment process.
• Experience investigating and leading cross-functional teams for safety escapes and occurrences for root cause and corrective action.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $168,000 - $320,000 USD.
