About the Role

As a central part of the university community, the mission of University Police is to contribute to and promote the greater mission of UNC Asheville by facilitating a safe, secure, and service-oriented environment for all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors. Police officers conduct law enforcement activities including patrolling, criminal investigations, crime prevention, assisting motorists, parking/traffic control, and providing security at special events. Officers also participate in training exercises in law enforcement, first-aid, and emergency response.

Responsibilities

• Patrol within the geographic jurisdiction of UNC Asheville.
• Conduct criminal investigations and crime prevention programs.
• Assist motorists and provide parking/traffic control.
• Provide security at special events.
• Prepare written reports of activities and incidents with accuracy.
• Act and direct others quickly in emergency situations.
• Maintain working knowledge of modern policing principles, Federal laws, NC General Statutes, local ordinances, and university policies.
• Perform other assigned duties as requested.

Requirements

• Minimum of High School diploma or GED.
• Completion of the State of NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.
• For out-of-state candidates: successful completion of a Basic Law Enforcement Training course accredited by the state of transfer, with no break in service exceeding one year. Additional training (96+ hours) may be required for NC Certification.
• Ability to prepare accurate written reports and make informed decisions in emergencies.
• Knowledge of Federal laws, NC General Statutes, local ordinances, and university policies.

Qualifications

• Police Officer I: 0-2 years of experience. Probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer.
• Police Officer II: 2 years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer. Current certification from NC CJETSC or certification eligible within an agency-specified timeframe.
• Police Officer III: 4 years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer. Current certification from NC CJETSC or certification eligible within an agency-specified timeframe.
• Master Police Officer I: 6 years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer (reduced by 1 year with an advanced degree). Current certification from NC CJETSC or certification eligible within an agency-specified timeframe.

Preferred Skills

• Current North Carolina BLET Certification.
• At least two years of campus law enforcement experience.
• Current certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or ability to achieve certification within one year.

Pay

Recruitment range: $50,000–$79,950.

Sign-on bonus of $4,500 (paid in three installments in the first year) for newly hired officers with at least one year of law enforcement experience, subject to eligibility requirements.

Schedule

• Full-time, 12-month position.
• Required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as needed.
• Subject to emergency call-back with compensatory time provided.
