About the role

The University of Utah Police Department (UUPD) seeks experienced Police Officers III to join our team. This position requires at least 9 years of experience as a Police Officer and certification as a Utah Post LEO (Law Enforcement Officer).

Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Conducts or assists in criminal, narcotics, traffic, and gang related investigations.
  • Assists the criminal intelligence operation by gathering information.
  • Takes initial reports/complaints, prepares written reports, and maintains detailed and accurate records.
  • Performs surveillance in high risk or known crime areas.
  • Obtains and serves search/arrest warrants, apprehends suspects, and performs warrantless searches and seizures.
  • Interviews and interrogates witnesses/suspects.
  • Prepares cases for the Office of the Attorney General and testifies in court.
  • Maintains issued equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in the classroom and field training of new officers.
  • Uses logic and reasoning to independently make critical decisions and uses initiative and common sense in various police functions.
  • Safely effects forcible arrests, pursues suspects on foot, safely controls combatants, responds to emergencies, accepts rotating shift and 24-hour on-call shifts, and ensures the safety of University students, staff, faculty, and visitors.

Requirements

  • At least 9 years experience as a Police Officer.
  • Certification as a Utah Post LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) prior to hire.
  • United States citizen; United States national; or Lawful permanent resident of the United States who has been in the United States legally for the five years immediately before the day on which the application is made and has legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • A valid Utah Driver's License to be obtained upon date of hire.
  • Considerable human relation and communication skills.
  • Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Criminology, Police Science, or a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Qualifications

  • Passes a psychological evaluation with a passing suitability rating.
  • Does not have a felony conviction or misdemeanor conviction involving violence, sexual conduct, or dishonesty.
  • Does not have a history of using illegal drugs while employed in any law enforcement or prosecutorial position, or while employed in a position carrying a high level of public trust.
  • Does not have any tattoos that are obscene, offensive, distract from professional appearance, or interfere with on-duty actions and responsibilities.
  • Does not have a military discharge less than honorable.
  • Passes a physical fitness assessment.

Pay

The starting pay range for this position is $45.29 - $50.93 per hour.

Schedule

Rotating: 27/7 rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends.
