Police Dispatcher – Campus Security
About the role
The primary function is to receive calls for service and interview callers of non-emergency and emergency requests to determine location, nature, and pertinent information to be entered into the CAD system clearly and accurately. You will enter, maintain, update, and research information using the TLETS/NLETS computer system, verify accuracy and completeness of TCIC/NCIC information, and communicate via telephone, radio, in person, email, and call notes in a courteous and professional manner. You must read, comprehend, and adhere to various SOPs, policies, procedures, and verbal direction while maintaining confidentiality of all sensitive information. The role also serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Clery Act.
Responsibilities
- Answer and process emergency and non-emergency telephone calls for police, fire, and ambulance services, as well as planned or special events and services.
- Accurately enter information received from callers into a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and dispatch appropriate resources.
- Monitor and utilize a camera system to observe incidents on campus or locate evidence.
- Initiate and compose emergency and non-emergency correspondence via email, call notes, and notifications to the campus community.
- Access and correctly read information from TLETS/NCIC and relay accurate and complete information to officers.
- Monitor fire and burglar alarms and dispatch appropriate resources; monitor bait bike information and dispatch officers on activation.
- Operate a TDD (Telephone Device for the Deaf), telephone system, copiers, fax machines, scanners, and other office equipment efficiently.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of experience in customer service or a related field.
- Basic Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) telecommunications operator license or qualification to acquire one.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or thirty credit hours in criminal justice or a related field.
- One year of experience in a public safety or emergency public safety communication field.
Skills
- Records maintenance and computer data entry skills.
- Clerical, word processing, and office skills.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to interact and communicate with people over the telephone, often in stressful situations.
- Ability to effectively operate an interoperable radio console.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks and solve problems in a technical setting.
- Knowledge of radio dispatch regulations, procedures, protocols, and equipment.
- Knowledge of fire and burglar alarm systems reporting.
- Skill in using NCIC identification and Computer Aided Dispatch software.
Pay
The annual salary for this position ranges from $48,000 to $55,800.
Schedule
Shift Schedule: Paid shift differential. This position operates 24/7 and requires non-traditional work hours such as nights, weekends, and holidays.
