Police Communications Operator

About the role

This position supports public safety by receiving, transmitting, and coordinating essential law enforcement information. You will assist Troopers and the public by managing calls, maintaining records, and relaying critical details during emergencies and general daily operations.

Responsibilities

• Call Handling: Receive emergency and non-emergency calls, gather details, and determine response priorities
• Incident Coordination: Dispatch information to Troopers and contact additional agencies for support
• Record Management: Access, research, and maintain records using CLEAN, JNET, PFAD, and other electronic systems
• Public Assistance: Respond to administrative inquiries and assist station visitors with information or service needs
• Training Participation: Attend public safety communications training and help train new operators on procedures
• Emergency Support: Assist with duties required during catastrophic incidents, including reporting to alternate locations

Requirements

• Two years of experience using two-way radio, multi-line telephone, or computer aided dispatch systems; or
• Two years of experience using computer systems for entering, updating, and retrieving information; or
• Completion of 60 college credits; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training
• At least one (1) year of experience in dispatching police, fire, or ambulance services for emergency response
• Clear, firm voice with no major speech, hearing, or visual impairments that would interfere with understanding verbal communication, being understood, or using electronic communications equipment and visual display equipment
• Obtain an active Public Safety Telecommunicator certification issued by the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials within the probationary period and maintain it for the duration of employment
• Obtain active Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) and Pennsylvania Justice Network (JNET) certifications issued by the Pennsylvania State Police within the probationary period and maintain them for the duration of employment
• Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements
• Submit a Report of Medications for screening by the State Police Medical Officer prior to placement
• Able to perform essential job functions

Schedule

• Full-time employment, 40 hours/week
• Rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays
• 30-minute lunch break
• No telework option available
