Police Communications Operator

Florida Atlantic University’s Police Department is seeking a Police Communications Operator in Boca Raton, FL. FAU is a dynamic public research university with over 30,000 students from all 50 states and over 180 countries, 21 intercollegiate teams, and 180+ degree programs.

Responsibilities

• Operate Police and other radio systems, monitor alarms, access control, and camera systems.
• Monitor 24/7 gun-detection software and License Plate Recognition system; respond, verify, enter hot-list data, trespass warnings, risk protection orders, and behavioral threats; dispatch appropriate personnel.
• Dispatch officers and other emergency personnel in accordance with departmental policy and procedure.
• Handle emergency and non-emergency telephone calls; prioritize calls and relay pertinent information to officers and supervisory personnel.
• Accurately document officer status, location, and activity.
• Make necessary emergency notifications.
• Operate Criminal Justice Information Systems terminal to run inquiries and enter persons, vehicles, and property at officers’ direction.
• Assist the public with complaints, informational services, lost-and-found property, directions, fingerprinting, and other services using tact and discretion while observing strict confidentiality.
• Direct individuals to the proper supervisory level as needed.
• Monitor messages related to local criminal activity, weather, and campus security issues as a 24/7 Emergency Management warning point; notify all campuses via the Sircom system.
• Demonstrate knowledge of police terminology and procedures, Florida criminal and civil law as it pertains to police operations, campus geography, and University policies.
• Perform other job-related duties as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma and one year of experience receiving, assessing, and dispatching calls for assistance.
• Florida state certification on the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) / Florida Crime Information Center (FCIC) computer system, obtained within six months of employment.
• 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator certification, obtained within six months of employment.
• Ability to communicate effectively, convey assurance, exercise tact and patience in stressful situations, and dispatch emergency personnel.
• Ability to master a variety of communications equipment (radios, telephones, recording devices, CAD terminals).
• Valid Florida driver’s license.

Pay

• Certified 911 Telecommunicator: $26.34 per hour.
• Non-Certified 911 Telecommunicator: $21.55 per hour.

Schedule

40-hour work week with variable shifts.
