About the Role

This Police Communications Operator position with the Pennsylvania State Police supports troopers by handling calls, organizing information, and communicating clearly during critical moments. The role works with advanced systems, assists the public, and helps maintain strong coordination between responders, contributing to emergency readiness and public safety every day.

Responsibilities

  • Call Handling: Receive emergency and non‑emergency calls, gather details, and determine response needs.
  • Incident Dispatch: Relay information to troopers using radio, telephone, and computer systems.
  • Agency Coordination: Contact fire, ambulance, towing, and other agencies to request assistance.
  • Record Management: Use the Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) and the Pennsylvania Justice Network (JNET) to research records and update incident information.
  • Public Interaction: Respond to administrative inquiries and assist visitors at the station.
  • Training Support: Participate in safety training and help train new operators on procedures.

Work Schedule

  • Full‑time employment, 40‑hour work week.
  • Rotating shifts that include weekends and holidays.
  • No telework option.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Experience and Training: Any two of the following:
    • Two years of experience using two‑way radio, multi‑line telephone, or computer‑aided dispatch systems.
    • Two years of experience using computer systems for entering, updating, and retrieving information.
    • Completion of 60 college credits.
    • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Special Requirements:
    • Clear, firm voice with no major speech, hearing, or visual impairments that would interfere with verbal communication or use of electronic communications and visual display equipment.
    • Obtain and maintain an active Public Safety Telecommunicator certification (Association of Public Safety Communications Officials) within the probationary period.
    • Obtain and maintain active CLEAN and JNET certifications issued by the Pennsylvania State Police within the probationary period.
  • Legal Requirements:
    • Ability to perform essential job functions.
    • Submit a Report of Medications for screening by the State Police Medical Officer prior to placement.
    • Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
