About the Role
The Home Base Primary Care (HBPC) Medical Director within the Geriatric and Extended Care Service at the Thomas E. Creek VA Health Care System is responsible for clinical oversight of all HBPC services in Amarillo and satellite programs. This position may be eligible for a recruitment or relocation incentive and the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).
Responsibilities
- Serve as the senior clinician responsible for the overall medical care delivered by the HBPC team.
- Collaborate with the HBPC Program Director to meet program requirements.
- Hold a faculty appointment and participate in academic activities with affiliated medical schools, residency, and fellowship programs.
- Provide patient care directly and supervise licensed independent practitioners (LIPs), residents, fellows, and medical students in home settings and other departments within the GEC Service line.
- Lead and direct HBPC development and programs, ensuring effective interface with HBPC staff.
- Participate fully in all accreditation processes, reviews, and site visits.
- Provide direct patient care, including assessments, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome measures of healthcare problems:
- Initiate and adjust therapeutic regimens.
- Perform histories and physicals.
- Order diagnostic and therapeutic tests/studies.
- Initiate consults and referrals.
- Prescribe medications/supplies in accordance with VA policy, VA formulary, federal and state regulations, and scope of practice.
- Collaborate with in-house specialty clinics and community providers.
Requirements
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a course of education in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. The degree must be from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed.
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Residency Training: Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include:
- Residencies approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- One year of post-medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA, followed by two years of post-training independent practice in the United States.
- Non-U.S. residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States, performing duties related to the position applied for.
- Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA-accredited residency programs who meet basic requirements may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) on an intermittent basis. Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Rare exceptions to residency training requirements may be approved by the VISN Director.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Qualifications
- Fellowship trained in Geriatrics.
- Board Certified/Board Eligible in Geriatrics.
- Experience working with the Geriatric Veteran population across various clinical settings, including clinics, nursing homes, home care, and consultative practice.
- Experience in Hospice and Palliative care.

Monday – Friday (08:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Pay
