About the role

The Cardiovascular and Thoracic staff physician is responsible for patient care, patient education and resident supervision. The Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon provides comprehensive cardiovascular and thoracic surgery care for patients within the scope of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. The scope of this activity covers all phases of clinical care in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery resident and possible medical student education with appropriate supervision in the outpatient setting, inpatient setting and operating room are expected of the provider.

Responsibilities

• Writes medical orders and prescriptions for the care of the patient in accordance with federal and state law.
• Documents care in the computerized patient record system in accordance with North Texas VA healthcare system requirements.
• Obtains consent and documents procedures performed for which the physician is responsible.
• Provides education and counseling of patients and their families and the use of prescribed treatments and medications for other medical conditions.
• Reviews revised policies and scope of practice standards to meet the needs of the National VA and North Texas VA healthcare system mandates.
• Completes consults received for cardiovascular and thoracic surgery evaluation.
• Performs a comprehensive and detailed history and physical examination in compliance with national guidelines.
• Orders diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, radiologic exams and procedures.

The Cardiovascular and Thoracic staff physician position encompasses the following examples of responsibilities:

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• License: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Physical Requirements: The position requires compliance with VA Handbook and VASTHCS Policy related to physical requirements.
