About the role
The Physical Therapist (PT) confirms and interprets physician referrals, performs patient assessments and plans and implements individualized treatment programs taking into account the patient's developmental and/or chronological age and medical diagnoses in accordance with the regulations governing the principles and practice of Physical Therapy.
Responsibilities
- Provides patient care based upon physician referral and age-appropriate assessment taking into consideration the patient’s developmental/chronological age and medical diagnoses when planning/implementing treatment programs designed to achieve goals set in conjunction with the patient and/or family member.
- Collaborates with other therapy staff, support staff, volunteers and students to achieve efficient clinical activity and quality patient care.
- Documents in the patient’s medical record, and completes other patient care-related forms in compliance with regulatory agencies and department/hospital policies and procedures.
- Supervises Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) as provided by State of Virginia licensure/practice standards and Federal regulations.
- Orients new employees and may provide guidance to volunteers, students, support, or contract staff.
- Communicates with persons who have similar or different functions inside or outside the organization.
- Suggests cost containment initiatives in immediate work unit/department.
- Interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age specific needs and provides care according to departmental policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Education: Graduate of approved school of Physical Therapy. Bachelor's degree as Physical Therapist and 5 years of experience, OR Master's or Doctorate degree required.
- Licensure/Certification: Licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia by the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy. AHA BLS-certified (from a Carilion approved program) within six months of employment.
Qualifications
- Experience: Experience in site specific level of care preferred but not required. For Home Health positions one year of clinical experience required.
- Effective interpersonal, communication, customer service and teamwork skills required.
Skills
- Knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development.
- Ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status.
