About the role

The Phlebotomist I represents the face of our company to patients within the hospital systems at Quest Diagnostics, both as part of their routine health management or for insights into life-defining health decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all age groups.
  • Accurately label and process specimens according to laboratory protocol.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of phlebotomy carts and work areas.
  • Administer oral solutions according to established training, such as Glucola.
  • Data entry and processing specimens including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test order.
  • Perform departmental-related clerical duties when assigned such as data entry, inventory, stock supplies, and answering phones when needed.
  • Read, understand and comply with departmental policies, protocols and procedures.
  • Observe infection control and safety protocols at all times.
  • Complete training courses and keep up to date with the latest phlebotomy techniques.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, nursing staff, and lab personnel.
  • Participate in special projects and teams.
  • Rotate through inpatient, outpatient, physicians’ offices, and ED settings as scheduled.
  • Assist with training new staff or students as needed.
  • Stay up to date on company communications.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as needed.

Requirements

  • Work Experience: Demonstrate proficient phlebotomy skills to include pediatric, geriatric, and capillary collections. Flexible and available based on staffing needs, which includes weekends, holidays, on-call and overtime.
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver's license, and clean driving record, if applicable.
  • Preferred Work Experience: One year of phlebotomy experience preferred. Customer service and healthcare experience preferred. Keyboard/data entry experience.
  • Physical And Mental Requirements: Lift light to moderately heavy objects. The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects. Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time; requires long hours of eye-hand coordination. Must be able to use stairs and/or elevators to move between floors as required by the job. Must be able to perform repetitive tasks with dominant hand frequently to constantly throughout the day.
  • Knowledge: Committed to all applicable Quest Diagnostics & Hospital System policies and procedures including company dress code, Employee Health & Safety, and Quest Diagnostics Everyday Excellence Guiding Principles. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Skills: Ability to provide quality, error free work in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work independently with minimal on-site supervision. Excellent phlebotomy skills to include pediatric and geriatric. Must demonstrate superior customer focus; engaging in positive interactions; ability to communicate openly and transparently with peers, supervisors and patients; ability to accelerate and embrace change throughout Quest; and knowledge of our business.
  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent. (Required) Preferred Technical Training Or Professional Licensing: Phlebotomy certification (required in certain states, e.g. California, Nevada, Washington and Louisiana) (Preferred).
