About the role
The Phlebotomist I represents Quest Diagnostics within hospital systems, interacting with patients to manage their health and providing critical blood samples.
Responsibilities
- Draws quality blood samples from patients following established practices and procedures.
- Accurately labels and processes specimens according to laboratory protocol.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of phlebotomy carts and work areas.
- Administers oral solutions as per established training.
- Data entry and processing specimens including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test order.
- Performs departmental-related clerical duties such as data entry, inventory, stock supplies, and answering phones.
- Complies with departmental policies, protocols, and procedures.
- Observes infection control and safety protocols.
- Completes all data entry requirements, including patient registration and test order entry.
- Ensures facilities are neat, clean, and in good repair, reporting necessary repairs and maintenance.
- Completes training courses and stays updated with the latest phlebotomy techniques.
- Communicates effectively with patients, nursing staff, and lab personnel.
- Participates in special projects and teams.
- Rotates through inpatient, outpatient, physicians' offices, and ED settings as scheduled.
- Aids in training new staff or students as needed.
- Stays informed about company communications.
- Performs additional duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Demonstrate proficient phlebotomy skills to include pediatric, geriatric, and capillary collections.
- Flexible and available based on staffing needs, including weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime.
- Must have reliable transportation, valid driver's license, and a clean driving record, if applicable.
- One year of phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Customer service and healthcare experience preferred.
- Keyboard/data entry experience.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Skills
- Quality, error-free work in a fast-paced environment.
- Independent work with minimal supervision.
- Excellent phlebotomy skills to include pediatric and geriatric.
- Superior customer focus; engaging in positive interactions; open and transparent communication with peers, supervisors, and patients.
- Knowledge of Quest Diagnostics policies and procedures.
