Key Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collections on patients of all ages, following established protocols to ensure sample integrity and patient comfort.
- Verify patient identity, explain procedures, and obtain informed consent prior to collections.
- Label, process, and transport specimens accurately to the laboratory for analysis, maintaining chain-of-custody documentation.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, including proper disposal of biohazardous waste and sharps.
- Aid with inventory management of phlebotomy supplies and equipment.
- Enter patient data and test requests into electronic health record (EHR) systems with a high degree of accuracy.
- Collaborate with healthcare team members, including nurses, physicians, and lab technicians, to ensure seamless patient care.
- Participate in quality assurance activities, such as proficiency testing and equipment calibration.
- Adhere to all Southeast Medical Group policies and procedures, including those related to patient privacy (HIPAA) and safety.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program preferred.
- Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (e.g., CPT from NHA, ASCP, or equivalent) required within 6 months of hire.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in phlebotomy, preferably in a clinical or hospital setting.
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, venipuncture techniques, and infection control practices.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to handle diverse patient populations compassionately.
- Proficiency in using medical software and equipment; basic computer skills required.
- Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 25 lbs, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

OSHA Compliance and Safety Requirements
- Complete annual training on exposure control plans, including the prevention of needlestick injuries and handling of potentially infectious materials.
- Use universal precautions at all times, such as treating all blood and body fluids as potentially infectious.
- Report any exposure incidents immediately for post-exposure evaluation and follow-up.
- Wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection, as provided by the employer.
- Be familiar with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals used in the lab (e.g., disinfectants) and follow safe handling practices to minimize exposure to hazardous substances.
- Utilize safety-engineered sharps devices (e.g., retractable needles) to reduce the risk of sharps injuries.
- Participate in evaluations of safer medical devices.
- Maintain a hazard-free work environment by following ergonomic guidelines to prevent musculoskeletal disorders, reporting unsafe conditions, and participating in emergency preparedness drills.
- Receive OSHA-mandated hepatitis B vaccinations free of charge.
- Train on OSHA-required training sessions.
