Pharmacy Informatics Technician I

Assists the Pharmacist in managing, maintaining, and advancing all pharmacy-related IT products while working with clinical staff to develop templated, efficient documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Pharmacist in providing medication, drug information, and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
  • Doses medications under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Maintains inventory of medications and supplies and reorders them accordingly.
  • Assists in filling anesthesia trays and floor stock orders.
  • Processes records of medications dispensed to patients or customers, computes charges, and enters them into the computer system.
  • Prepares select reports.
  • Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies.
  • Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement and CQI activities.
  • Assists the Pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care for patients ranging in age from newborn to the elderly, understanding dosage variations between age groups.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Maintains the Pharmacy Department in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Performs other pharmacy-related duties as requested or required.
  • Applies common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form.
  • Deals with problems involving several variables in particular situations.
  • Recognizes inappropriate dosing based on available dosage forms for various age groups.
  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
  • Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
  • Attends annual review and department in-services, as scheduled.
  • Cooperates with employees in the pharmacy and other departments to provide optimal customer service.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
  • Demonstrates cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Serves as a knowledgeable expert for placement, configuration, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting automation and technology systems, providing consultative support to users and staff.
  • Collaborates with the pharmacist informaticist in managing technology and information systems based on a shared understanding of system requirements, capabilities, and limitations.
  • Identifies end-user educational requirements and training needs, developing educational programs, instructional materials, and tools to educate users and support staff.
  • Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge of changes in technology and the clinical environment to identify, propose, and support new or revised technological policies and directives.
  • Maintains ongoing relationships with onsite peers, pharmacist informaticists, technical support staff, administrative staff, and healthcare professionals within the facility.
  • Maintains appropriate charging controls to ensure accurate patient and third-party billing.
  • Extracts, compiles, and analyzes standard reports from clinical and automation systems to facilitate organizational and individual decision-making.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to geriatric population obtained either in school education, experience, or subsequent training.
  • Graduate of certified training program/healthcare careers college and/or equivalent training.
  • Pharmacy technician certification.
  • One year of related pharmacy experience and/or equivalent education.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English; additional languages preferred.
  • Must be a motivated critical thinker and problem solver.
  • Capable of appropriate and proactive cooperation with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Works well under pressure and can meet multiple, sometimes competing deadlines.
  • Can maintain confidentiality.
