Person In Charge (PIC)

About the role

Exemplifies and ensures strong customer service in all aspects of the job. Directs and controls the operation of the Front End in the absence of store management to achieve sales and profit objectives. Acts as the primary contact for customers, providing friendly, courteous, and helpful service. During the absence of the Store Manager and Assistant Managers, the PIC is in charge of the store with analogous authority to make necessary decisions to operate the store at maximum profit, efficiency, and superior customer service.

Responsibilities

• Provide customer service as defined by the employer within company policy.
• Handle emergencies, customer complaints, employee or customer accidents, and supervise all store personnel.
• Maintain familiarity with company policies and procedures.
• Supervise the sales floor to monitor service and replenishment of products.
• Replace stock in displays surrounding the checkout area.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment within the store.
• Assist other cashiers with computer, register, and scanner problems.
• Perform basic office functions to assist customers and personnel.
• Operate an electronically scanning cash register to total customers’ final bill.
• Receive payment for customer purchases and count back correct change.
• Bag groceries in paper, canvas, or plastic bags and lift bags into grocery carts.
• Offer customer assistance with carry-out and perform that task if a Courtesy Clerk is not available.
• Complete close-of-day functions in the office and count out-of-stock product as needed.
• Count tills when other cashier-checkers leave.
• May be required to work in many departments within the store.

Qualifications

• Ability to follow company customer service procedures.
• Demonstrated prior customer service skills or related experience.
• Ability to interact with customers and co-workers.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions.
• Knowledge of all positions within the store.
• Ability to work independently.
• Desired: Prior experience as a clerk or manager.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises all store employees during the absence of the Store Director or Assistant Store Director.

Pay

The pay range is $18.16–$26.15 per hour, but no less than the local minimum wage. Starting rates vary based on location, experience, qualifications, and the terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement.
