About the Role
The Person In Charge (PIC) exemplifies and ensures strong customer service while directing and controlling Front End operations in the absence of store management. The PIC acts as the primary customer contact, supervises store employees, and makes necessary decisions to maintain maximum profit, efficiency, and superior customer service. This role also functions as a Cashier-Checker and may work across multiple store departments.
Responsibilities
- Provide customer service in alignment with company policy.
- Handle emergencies, customer complaints, and employee or customer accidents.
- Maintain familiarity with company policies and procedures.
- Supervise the sales floor to monitor service and product replenishment.
- Restock displays around the checkout area.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Assist cashiers with register, scanner, or computer issues.
- Perform basic office functions to assist customers and personnel.
- Operate a cash register to total customer bills, receive payments, and provide correct change.
- Bag groceries and assist customers with carry-out when needed.
- Complete end-of-day office functions as required.
- Count out-of-stock products and cashier tills.
- Supervise all store employees during the absence of the Store Director or Assistant Store Director.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to follow company customer service procedures.
- Demonstrated customer service skills or related experience.
- Ability to interact effectively with customers and coworkers.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Knowledge of all store positions.
- Ability to work independently.
- Desired: Prior experience as a clerk or manager.
Work Environment
- 100% inside work; rare outside exposure.
- Chemical exposure: Seldom (mild detergents or glass cleaner).
- Equipment used: Six-wheeled cart, grocery cart, box cutter, pens/pencils, spray bottle, rags, mops, broom, telephone/intercom, cash register, credit card scanner, computer, pallet jack, bailer.
Physical Demands
- Lifting: Constantly 1–10 lbs; frequently 11–20 lbs; seldom 21–35 lbs.
- Carrying: Occasionally 1–10 lbs; seldom 11–50 lbs.
- Pushing/Pulling: Constantly 1–10 lbs; occasionally 11–20 lbs.
- Reaching: Constant knee-to-shoulder; seldom overhead or at/above shoulder level.
- Standing: Constant while on the job; sitting allowed on breaks.
- Walking: Frequent while on the job.
- Climbing/Balancing: Seldom (e.g., using a step stool for high shelves).
- Trunk Functions: Frequent neck rotation and head bending; occasional bending/stooping, twisting, crouching, and squatting; seldom kneeling.
- Upper Extremity: Constant handling/grasping and repetitive motion; frequent fine finger manipulation.
- Vision: Peripheral and depth perception for store navigation; near vision for scanning, making change, and troubleshooting.
- Hearing: Required for customer/employee conversations, answering pages/telephone.
- Speech: Required to respond to customers/employees and use intercom/telephone.
This is a safety-sensitive position.
Pay
The pay range is $17.38 to $21.88 per hour, but no less than the local minimum wage. Starting rates vary based on location, experience, qualifications, and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
