About the role
The Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University, in partnership with the Division of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, is seeking a board-certified (or equivalent) MD/DO pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist to lead the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology team at VCU. The pediatric anesthesiologist will report to both the Chair of Anesthesia and the Surgeon in Chief for the Children’s Hospital. The position is based in Richmond and offers opportunities in clinical practice, academic pursuits, and education of fellows, residents, and medical students.
Responsibilities
- Provide anesthesia care for the full spectrum of congenital heart disease, including complex neonates, adult congenital heart disease, mechanical cardiac support, and heart transplantation
- Coordinate anesthesia care for patients with congenital heart disease across the operating room, cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratories, and non-invasive laboratories for sedated echocardiographic and cardioversion procedures
- Lead day-to-day Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology operations
- Engage in Quality and Safety Initiatives, Community Outreach, and interdepartmental proceedings
Qualifications
- MD or DO degree
- ABA Board eligible/certified in Anesthesiology
- Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
- Eligible for employment in the United States
- Good communication, clinical, and teaching skills
- Formal training in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology or considerable experience in the field
- Ability to work collegially within a multidisciplinary system

- Leadership experience strongly desired
