Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine is a premier academic medical center located in the heart of Richmond. The Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, in collaboration with the Division of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, is seeking a talented MD/DO board-certified (or equivalent) pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist to lead the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology team at VCU.
About the Role
This position offers the unique opportunity to participate in clinical practice, academic endeavors, and education for fellows, residents, and medical students. The role involves coordinating anesthesia care for patients with congenital heart disease across multiple settings, including the operating room, cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratory, and non-invasive laboratory for sedated echocardiographic and cardioversion procedures.
The Pediatric Anesthesia group consists of 10 faculty members, with three experienced in cardiac anesthesia serving as backup. The pediatric anesthesiologist will report dually to the Chair of Anesthesia and the Surgeon in Chief for the Children’s Hospital. The VCU Health System provides comprehensive pediatric cardiac care, including congenital surgery, diagnostic and interventional catheterization, fetal care, electrophysiology, and basic science.
Services are located in the new inpatient children’s tower, featuring a state-of-the-art hybrid cardiac procedure suite. The Virginia Congenital Cardiac Collaborative (VC3), a partnership between VCU and the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital, aims to deliver high-quality patient care, expand research, and enhance education within the local community under the motto “two campuses, one program.”
Responsibilities
- Lead the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology team in day-to-day operations.
- Coordinate anesthesia care for patients with congenital heart disease, including complex neonates, adult congenital heart disease, mechanical cardiac support, and heart transplantation.
- Provide anesthesia services in the operating room, cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratory, and non-invasive laboratory.
- Engage in quality and safety initiatives, community outreach, and interdepartmental proceedings.
- Participate in the education of fellows, residents, and medical students.
Requirements
- MD or DO degree.
- ABA Board eligible/certified in Anesthesiology.
- Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia.
- Eligible for employment in the United States.
- Good communication, clinical, and teaching skills.
- Formal training or considerable experience in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology.
- Ability to work collegially within a multidisciplinary system.
Preferred Qualifications
- Leadership experience strongly desired.
