Overview
Our client, a leading federal construction services company, is seeking a Payroll Manager to oversee payroll operations across 22 states. This is a hands-on payroll role without direct reports, making it an excellent fit for a payroll professional who enjoys owning the entire payroll process. The ideal candidate will bring multi-state payroll experience within the construction, skilled trades, manufacturing, or similar industries, along with knowledge of certified payroll and federal contract requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and process weekly multi-state payroll across 22 states
- Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Process employee changes, new hires, terminations, benefits, and deductions
- Prepare and file weekly, monthly, and quarterly payroll tax filings
- Reconcile payroll and tax reports
- Manage HH2 timesheets and payroll reporting
- Prepare, reconcile, and upload 401(k) contributions
- Process employee reimbursements
- Complete weekly certified payroll reporting
- Support audit requests and maintain payroll documentation
- Record payroll activity and tax payments in cash reporting
- Partner with HR and leadership on payroll-related matters
Qualifications
- 6+ years of payroll experience required
- Recent multi-state payroll experience required; experience supporting payroll in numerous states is strongly preferred
- Experience within construction, skilled trades, manufacturing, industrial, engineering, or similar project-based industries required
- Experience supporting federal government contractors or organizations performing federal contract work required
- Strong knowledge of payroll taxes, payroll compliance, and reporting requirements
- Experience with certified payroll reporting highly preferred
- Sage experience preferred
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills required
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines independently
