Paul L. Locatelli, S.J. Assistant Professor of Classics

Santa Clara University’s Department of Classics and Ancient Studies invites applications for the Paul L. Locatelli, S.J. Assistant Professorship of Classics, a full-time endowed tenure-track position beginning September 1, 2027. The successful candidate will hold the title of Paul L. Locatelli, S.J. Assistant Professor during the probationary period and will have access to supplementary research funds.

About the Role

The department seeks a broadly trained teacher-scholar working in Latin literature and Roman culture within its wider global context. Applicants with research and teaching interests in interdisciplinary areas—such as gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, ecocriticism, cognitive studies, economics and entrepreneurship, or reception—will receive particular consideration, as will candidates who demonstrate the ability or commitment to recruit and retain language students. Responsibilities

• Teaching: Teach six courses per year (two per quarter) at the lower- and upper-division levels, including introductory and advanced Greek and Latin, courses in Roman Legacy, and personally-designed core-curriculum offerings. Faculty are expected to engage in significant student interaction and employ inclusive, evidence-based pedagogy aligned with Ignatian principles (cura personalis). Teaching effectiveness is evaluated according to departmental standards (TESE).
• Research/Creative Work: Develop a program of research or creative work that meets the department’s tenure and promotion standards. New faculty receive mentorship, cohort support, retreats, and professional development opportunities to advance their scholarship.
• Service: Contribute to the department, College of Arts and Sciences, University, and profession through committee work, leadership, and community engagement.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Classics or a closely related discipline by September 1, 2027.
• Demonstrated potential for effective and inclusive teaching and mentoring.
• Ability to teach Ancient Greek and Latin at all undergraduate levels.
• Ability to teach a range of core courses.
• Potential for effective service to the department, college, or university.

Pay

Salary range: $86,284–$95,901, depending on years of college-level teaching experience.
