About the role

The Department of Classics at Amherst College invites applications for two positions-a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor of classics and a full-time tenured position at the rank of associate or full professor of classics. The appointment with tenure will be contingent upon a positive tenure review. Both positions will begin on July 1, 2027, and both require a Ph.D. in classics or a related field by the start of the appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Greek and Latin at all levels, as well as courses of general appeal in the field of Greco-Roman studies broadly defined.
  • Teach with distinction in a liberal-arts context, including courses in the First-Year Seminar Program and other collaborations.
  • Have an original and generative set of research projects, and for the tenured position, a superior record of publication, teaching, and professional service.
  • Be committed to undergraduate and interdisciplinary teaching.
  • Advise senior thesis projects and participate in the life of the college and the department.
  • Complement and expand departmental areas of expertise, promote student engagement, and build a diverse intellectual community.

Requirements

In addition to having a well-articulated research plan, successful candidates will be committed to undergraduate and interdisciplinary teaching in a liberal-arts context and must be able to teach with distinction Greek and Latin at all levels, as well as courses of general appeal in the field of Greco-Roman studies broadly defined.

Qualifications

The areas of research specialization are open and include: visual and material culture; rhetoric, law, and democracy; social and cultural history; performance and reception; and knowledge production (scientific and technical).

Skills

The successful candidate will be expected to have the ability to direct writing and research at all undergraduate levels and to advise senior thesis projects.

Pay

  • Assistant Professor of Classics (tenure track): $90,000 to $125,000
  • Associate or Full Professor of Classics (with tenure): $105,000 to $135,000 at the associate professor rank and $120,000 to $200,000 at the full professor rank

Schedule

The teaching load is two courses per semester, normally three language courses per year.
