About the Role
The Classics Department at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time, tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, with any research specialization in Classical Studies. Preference will be given to advanced Associate Professors and Full Professors. Exceptional candidates may be considered for the Robert D. Novak Chair of Western Civilization and Culture.
The person hired will contribute to the highly successful general education curriculum by regularly teaching a large-enrollment class on Greek and Roman mythology, as well as other courses in Classical Civilization and, depending on specialization, Greek, Latin, or material culture, at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The teaching load is 2-2.
The successful candidate will contribute to the mission of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which brings together diverse disciplines to explore fundamental questions and address complex challenges through innovative research, transformative teaching, and thoughtful mentoring.

Responsibilities
- Maintain a distinguished publication record.
- Teach effectively at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including large format lecture classes.
- Perform administrative duties associated with the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs.
- Participate in departmental activities in the areas of student mentorship, curricular innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Classics or a closely related field.
- Research and teaching record in Classics or a closely related field.
- Evidence of accomplishment in teaching, particularly in large lecture formats.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to an inclusive learning environment through research, teaching, and/or service.
Preference will be given to applicants who have built an international reputation as a scholar and have a record of outstanding teaching.

Pay
The budgeted salary range for the position is $100,000 to $120,000 at the Associate Professor level, and $120,000 to $165,000 at the Full Professor level, on a 9-month service basis paid over 12 months. The pay offered will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
Schedule
The anticipated start date is August 16, 2027, but is flexible based on the successful applicant's needs. This is a full-time, tenured position based at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus.
This position is eligible for sponsorship for work authorization, except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur the $100,000 fee.
