About the role
The Department of History invites applications and nominations for the Crawford Professor of East Asian History, a full-time tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, specializing in the history of Modern China. The anticipated start date is August 16, 2027.
We welcome applications from historians whose research focuses on any aspect of Modern China from the nineteenth century to the present. Scholars working on all thematic areas are encouraged to apply.
Requirements
- PhD in History or a closely related field.
- Established record of scholarly achievement appropriate for appointment with tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Applicants currently holding the rank of Assistant Professor, or equivalent, whose scholarly record supports appointment with tenure at the Associate Professor level are encouraged to apply.
- Substantial engagement with Chinese-language primary sources and scholarship.
- Record of original research appropriate to the rank sought, and an active research agenda with clear plans for future scholarship.
- Experience teaching Chinese and East Asian history to students from a wide range of backgrounds.
- Preparedness to discuss approaches to teaching and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Record of service appropriate to career stage and a demonstrated ability to contribute to strengthening Chinese and East Asian studies within the department, across the university, and in the profession.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction in Modern Chinese history and broader East Asian history.
- Develop courses that complement research and teaching interests.
- Strengthen the interdisciplinary community of historians and scholars of East Asia through research, teaching, mentoring, service, and intellectual collaboration.
- Contribute to the mission of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois, preparing students for a lifetime of inquiry, leadership, and service through innovative research, transformative teaching, and thoughtful mentoring.

Pay
The budgeted salary range is $110,000–125,000 for an appointment at the Associate Professor level and $120,000–160,000 for an appointment at the Full Professor level, based on a 9-month service basis paid over twelve months. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also taking internal equity into consideration. The Crawford Professorship also includes a generous annual research support.
Schedule
This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy.
