Assistant/Associate/Full Professor- Philosophy- College of LAS

The Philosophy Department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, seeks candidates with expertise in Early Modern Philosophy for a tenure-track/tenured position at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level with a target start date of August 16, 2027.

About the role

The successful candidate will teach 4 courses per year (2 per semester) at the lower- and upper-division undergraduate and graduate levels, with particular instructional needs in graduate-level courses in Early Modern and the upper-classmen capstone class.

Responsibilities

• Teach assigned courses at undergraduate and graduate levels
• Provide graduate and undergraduate advising
• Conduct research in Early Modern Philosophy and related areas, resulting in publications with academic journals and university presses, as well as other research outputs such as grants, fellowships, awards, and scholarly presentations
• Participate in faculty meetings, departmental committees, and other departmental initiatives
• Contribute to service at the college, university, and professional levels
• Foster an inclusive and collaborative teaching, learning, departmental, and research environment

Requirements

• Ph.D. in philosophy or a related discipline
• Evidence of ability to contribute significantly to the department and discipline through research, teaching, service, and leadership
• Demonstrated creativity and success in teaching at levels appropriate to experience
• Experience with or ability to foster an inclusive and collaborative environment

Candidates whose Ph.D. may be delayed but will complete all requirements within the first appointment year may be appointed at the rank of Instructor and later transition to Assistant Professor.

Qualifications by Rank

• Assistant Professor: Evidence of a promising research agenda and a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching
• Associate/Full Professor: Established record in research, teaching, and service, including teaching graduate-level courses in Early Modern Philosophy and upper-classmen capstone courses

Pay

This is a full-time, 9-month appointment with a budgeted salary range (paid over 12 months):

• Assistant Professor: $77,000 to $85,000
• Associate Professor: $85,000 to $100,000
• Full Professor: $100,000 to $135,000

The final salary will be determined based on experience, qualifications, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable roles.
