Assistant Professor of Classics

About the role

The Department of Classics at Carleton College invites applicants for a tenure-track position in classical philology beginning fall 2027. The successful candidate will be a dynamic teacher‑scholar able to teach Latin and Greek at all levels and enthusiastic about working in a liberal arts environment. Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,000 students located in Northfield, Minnesota, within easy reach of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

Responsibilities

• Teach in the department’s four‑course Latin and Greek language sequences.
• Offer upper‑level Greek and Latin courses.
• Develop and teach in‑translation courses on literature and culture.

Requirements

• Hold a Ph.D. in Classics (or closely related field) by the time of appointment.
• Demonstrated ability to teach Latin and Greek at all levels.
• Commitment to teaching students from a wide variety of backgrounds.
