Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Classics

St. Olaf College’s Department of Classics seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning August 2027. We welcome a dynamic teacher-scholar who will work closely with students on campus and abroad, advance the College’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, and participate in departmental and college-wide activities. The area of specialization is open, but expertise in classical languages and literature is essential.

About the Department

The Classics Department offers majors in Classics, Latin, and Greek, as well as interdisciplinary majors in Ancient Studies and Medieval Studies. The department provides intellectually rigorous and engaging educational experiences, featuring an active Eta Sigma Phi chapter, robust co-curricular activities, and a long tradition of study abroad and community outreach.

Responsibilities

• Teach Greek and Latin language courses at all levels
• Teach classical civilization courses
• Teach January-term courses, including those taught in Greece or Italy
• Contribute to interdisciplinary programs such as Enduring Questions, Environmental Studies, or Film Studies
• Mentor undergraduate students in research
• Participate in departmental and college-wide activities

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Classics or a related field completed by September 1, 2027
• Demonstrated strong teaching skills and scholarly promise
• Potential to involve students in mentored undergraduate research
• Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching, research, and/or service

$77,200 - $82,000
