Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Classical Studies

About the role

The Department of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track position in Latin literature and Roman culture at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in the 2027–28 academic year. We seek a colleague who will contribute to our ongoing efforts to reimagine the field of Classical Studies through scholarship, teaching, and public engagement.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to ongoing efforts to reimagine the field of Classical Studies through scholarship, teaching, and public engagement.
• Teach Latin language and literature at all levels.
• Provide Classical Studies courses that appeal to a wide range of students.
• Collaborate productively with colleagues both in and beyond the department.
• Teaching load is four courses per year, one of which is typically at the graduate level.

Requirements

The PhD must be completed by July 1, 2027.

• Achieve excellence in teaching with a commitment to pedagogy and student mentorship.
• Engage deeply with the diverse ancient Greek and Roman worlds and their receptions.
• Work with students in the PhD program in Greek and Latin Languages and Literatures.
• Potentially work with graduate students in cognate programs such as Ancient History, Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World, and Comparative Literature.
• Teach and advise students in Penn’s Postbaccalaureate Program in Classical Studies.

• An excellent teacher with a commitment to pedagogy and student mentorship.
