We deliver comprehensive clinical laboratory services to clients ranging from large tertiary care centers to small community practices.

About the role

Collects and processes laboratory specimens and performs associated clerical functions pertaining to patient, client, and billing functions.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy services utilizing customer service standards, including AIDET.
  • Follows proper collection and specimen labeling procedures and AABB standards regarding patient identification; consistently obtains blood specimens by venipuncture, capillary draws, heel sticks, glucose tolerance testing, and/or blood cultures as described in the Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories’ Phlebotomy Policy & Procedures.
  • Processes specimens post-collection by ensuring accurate labeling, following special handling requirements (e.g., correct number of tubes, temperature constraints), and spinning down or aliquotting specimens as indicated in the test directory.
  • Accurately and efficiently completes laboratory requisition forms and other forms by obtaining correct patient demographics, insurance information, diagnosis information, advanced beneficiary notification (ABN), and clarifying ambiguous physician orders.
  • Ensures patient confidentiality; logs, sorts, and distributes laboratory reports to the appropriate client/clinic.
  • Maintains prescribed levels of equipment and supplies; notifies leadership of equipment needing repair or replacement.
  • Attends mandatory department meetings and contributes to positive communication flow.
  • Maintains a neat, orderly, and organized assigned site; performs light janitorial duties, including surface disinfection.
  • Orients new co-workers regarding location-specific procedures, such as supply locations and equipment operation.
  • Proactively informs leadership of changes, problems, or concerns at the assigned location.
  • Contacts patients for repeat draws as needed.
  • Maintains high efficiency with site-specific computer programs, including EPIC and patient registration/check-in procedures.
  • Proficient at Urine Drug Collection and Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT), accurately completing related paperwork.
  • Completes weekly maintenance logs, tally sheets, temperature logs, and other required forms, submitting them to management as needed.
  • Actively participates in training as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED is preferred.
  • Completion of a phlebotomy course, including clinicals, or 6 months of experience with phlebotomy as a regular daily responsibility, including a minimum of 100 draws.
  • ASCP or ACA Certification Preferred.
  • Proficiency in Windows-based computer skills and clerical functions (e.g., telephones, emails, pagers, copiers, fax machines).
  • Demonstrated complex problem-solving skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Pay

Positions with an FTE of 0.8–1.0 are eligible for full-time medical, dental, and vision benefits. Positions with an FTE of 0.5–0.799 are eligible for part-time pro-rated benefits.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week).
  • 1st shift: 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday.
