Patient Placement Coordinator - PART TIME
Part-time position based in Phoenix.
About the role
The Patient Placement Coordinator is the front line of our hospital. You will be the voice, eyes, and ears for families and providers seeking information about the services Phoenix Children’s can offer. This role requires a broad knowledge of hospital operations, the ability to educate callers about Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH), and the clinical skills of an RN to direct patients and physicians to appropriate resources. You will handle highly complex medical cases and must have a minimum of 2–3 years of Emergency Room experience.
This position is accountable for coordinating and accepting information regarding direct admissions and transfers to Phoenix Children’s. Responsibilities include managing all aspects of patient placement within the facilities and partnering with nursing and other clinical departments to facilitate patient access, throughput, and capacity.
Responsibilities
- Manage requests for all transfers and direct admissions, facilitating provider communication.
- Accurately collect intake data for patients from various locations, including ED, physician offices, Phoenix Children’s clinics, and referring facilities.
- Coordinate and document all MD-to-MD acceptance calls with a focus on quality and customer service.
- Collaborate with the Patient Placement Representative to determine patient benefits and eligibility.
- Manage and accept all ED referral calls (non-EMS) and communicate incoming referrals to the ED.
- Triage and prioritize patient information and acuity using critical thinking, clinical decision-making, and established processes to assess and facilitate patient flow across multiple facilities.
- Demonstrate knowledge of human growth and development, assessment, and care of patients of all ages served.
- Proactively manage patient placement, throughput, and hospital bed capacity.
- Maintain the bed board accurately and in a timely manner, escalating bed placement or capacity issues to leadership as needed.
- Work with nursing units and leaders to identify the best available bed placement based on patient needs, staffing resources, level of care requirements, infection control principles, and throughput goals.
- Review and plan for all scheduled admissions daily.
- Collaborate with key departments such as admitting, EVS, and case management to ensure timely patient admissions and a positive patient and family experience.
- Act as a role model for Family-Centered Care and Customer Service, demonstrating positive and timely communication with internal and external customers.
- Maintain excellent telephone etiquette and clear communication skills, demonstrating sincerity in all interactions.
- Multi-task effectively, including transcribing information into a database while speaking with callers.
- Participate in department-specific process improvement initiatives.
- Assist in tracking and trending barriers in patient flow, transfers, or customer service, and make recommendations for solutions.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as requested.
Requirements
- Current State of Arizona RN license or an RN license from a compact state with multistate privileges (or ability to establish licensure according to Arizona law prior to start date).
- Current BLS certification for Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical RN experience.
- Pediatric experience.
- Two-year (ADN) degree in nursing, a four-year (BSN) degree in nursing, or a Diploma Nursing degree.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or currently enrolled in an RN-to-BSN program (preferred).
- Current PALS certification (preferred).
- Minimum of 2–3 years of Emergency Room experience.

Schedule
- Part-time, with shifts varying between Monday–Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
- Shift hours: 9:00 AM – 9:30 PM.
