About the Role
This position leads the Patient Access team by providing continuing education, training, communicating process and procedure changes, and being on call for Patient Access questions and shift coverage.
Responsibilities
- Train new and existing employees in patient registration functions, including Emergency Center (EC), Outpatient (OP), Inpatient (IP), and Surgery Center, as well as how to read and properly load insurance information into registration pathways.
- Teach effective and respectful customer service techniques.
- Assist the Patient Access Manager with scheduling and provide on-call coverage for questions and employee call-offs.
- Cover vacant shifts caused by call-offs.
- Assist the Patient Access Manager with creating and modifying policies and procedures.
- Perform all responsibilities of a Patient Access Specialist, working assigned shifts in this role and providing coverage for additional hours as needed.
- When training new or current employees, fill their regular registration hours with PRNs or existing employees.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum: High School Diploma and completion of a Healthcare Certification Program in Billing, Coding, or Customer Service, or currently enrolled in a related program. Extensive experience in Patient Access or Patient Accounts may substitute for certification.
- Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree.
- Minimum: Three (3) years’ experience in Patient Access Registration in an acute care hospital and/or physician office setting. Hospital or physician business office experience may substitute for Patient Access experience.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Technical expertise in all aspects of healthcare benefits, including HMO, PPO, indemnity plans, Medicare, Medicaid, and other local or state programs.
- Working knowledge of third-party benefits limitations.
- Preferred: Seven (7) plus years’ experience in Patient Access Registration in an acute care hospital and/or physician office setting.
