Patient Access Representative

About the role
This position is responsible for creating a first impression of Methodist Hospital to our patients, visitors and customers by providing a warm welcome and ensuring interactions are professional and courteous. The role involves gathering demographic information for complete and accurate registration, including insurance verifications for outpatient services, emergency center arrivals, and admissions. The position requires expertise in insurance selection to accurately input information provided by the patient/guarantor and validate it using payer eligibility resources to ensure the accuracy of claim submission.
This position must be cross-trained to support the overall registration process in the Emergency Center, General Admitting, and Surgery Admitting. Adherence to the EMTALA policy is required during the registration process when gathering insurance information and collecting payments in the Emergency Center. Compliance with Joint Commission and all other hospital and government regulations applicable within the admission setting is mandatory. The role also requires attending continuing education classes and completing mandatory training to maintain department-specific requirements and professional growth.
Responsibilities
- Provide a warm welcome and professional interactions with patients, visitors, and customers.
- Gather and verify demographic and insurance information for accurate patient registration.
- Utilize payer eligibility resources to validate insurance information for accurate claim submission.
- Support registration processes in the Emergency Center, General Admitting, and Surgery Admitting.
- Adhere to EMTALA policy during registration and payment collection in the Emergency Center.
- Maintain compliance with Joint Commission and other hospital and government regulations.
- Attend continuing education classes and complete mandatory training.
- Use registration software extensively.
- Demonstrate competency in insurance selection/process through monthly assessments and annual examinations.
Requirements
- Demonstrated PC and keyboard experience.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work cohesively and respectfully with a diverse workforce and patient population.
- Critical thinking skills for complex situations.
- Ability to meet quality and productivity standards, including accuracy in patient registrations and customer satisfaction.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- Post high school degree or certification.
- Healthcare registration experience.
- Healthcare revenue cycle experience.
Equipment likely to be used includes personal computers, copiers, fax machines, telephones, credit card machines, and scanners.
