About the Role
The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for our patients and therefore must represent BJC with the highest standard of customer service, compassion and perform all duties in a manner consistent with our mission, vision, values, and BJC service standards. This position will facilitate all components of the patients' entrance into any BJC facility, requiring a high level of emotional intelligence and the ability to make a personal connection. The role highly impacts reimbursement levels and denial prevention through accurate collection of demographics, insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collection. Selecting the correct patient from the master person index (MPI) is critical to patient safety.
This is a part-time position, 3 days per week with 8-hour evening shifts, located at our Convenient Care facility in O'Fallon, MO.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate hospital registration and scheduling within multiple BJC systems.
- Ensure proper patient identification, registration, scheduling, insurance verification, and document scanning/retrieval.
- Validate that orders are complete, signed by the ordering provider, and the correct test is ordered.
- Provide patients with preparation instructions for scheduled procedures, education on financial responsibilities, and collect applicable payments.
- Comply with complex regulatory guidelines, including Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP), HIPAA Privacy Standards, Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO Requirements.
- Ensure each patient completes HIPAA acknowledgement.
- Utilize critical thinking skills to assess and respond to a variety of situations, anticipating patients' needs.
- Communicate professionally and positively with patients, families, and co-workers, both in-person and by phone.
- Maintain the integrity of patients' clinical and financial records by correctly selecting the patient from the MPI.
- Consistently meet or exceed quality standards and serve as a mentor for lesser-skilled employees.

Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED (required).
- Associate's Degree (preferred).
- 2-5 years of experience (preferred).
- CHAA certification (preferred).
- Strong attention to detail and knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, and federal, state, and accreditation agencies.
- Exceptional communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and solve complex issues.
