Part-Time Sociology Instructor (Pool)

FLSA Status: Exempt. Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based on education and credited experience. Initial placement ranges: Lab Course (Salary Schedule HB) - $89.20 to $130.94 per hour; Lecture Course (Salary Schedule HC) - $103.85 to $151.07. Assignments are semester-based as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Teach classes as assigned from the regular Sociology Department curriculum.
• Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours.
• Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies.
• Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs.

The College offers both day and evening classes.

Requirements

• Master’s or higher in sociology, OR
• Bachelor’s in sociology AND Master’s or higher in anthropology, any ethnic studies, social work, or psychology, OR the equivalent.
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.

• Degree Equivalence: A degree with similar content to those listed for the discipline, where the degree title or coursework differs slightly.
• Academic Background Equivalence: At least 24 semester units in the academic field, plus a broad cultural education equivalent to a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree general education requirements.
• Professional Achievement Equivalence: Evidence of outstanding professional achievement, training, publications, portfolios, speaking engagements, or ability equivalent to the minimum qualifications.

Employment Standards

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• College-level courses in one or more of the following areas of sociology: Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, or Understanding Diverse Racial/Ethnic Cultures.
• Recent successful experience in teaching or preparation to teach in the discipline.
• Use of technology in teaching.
• Understanding and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college.
• Ability to develop teaching methods emphasizing cooperation, collaboration, and active learning.
• Skill in organizing and explaining materials for students with varying abilities, preparation levels, and cultural experiences.
• Ability to develop instructional learning outcomes and assess student achievement.
• Commitment to established academic standards and integrating writing skills across the curriculum.
