FLSA Status: Exempt. Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based on education and credited experience.

Assignments are semester-based as needed.

Teach classes as assigned from the regular Sociology Department curriculum
Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours
Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies
Perform other duties required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and institutional needs

The College offers both day and evening classes.

Master’s or higher in sociology
OR Bachelor’s in sociology AND Master’s or higher in anthropology, any ethnic studies, social work, or psychology
OR demonstrated equivalency through degree, academic background, or professional achievement (see below)
Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity, and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

Applicants may demonstrate equivalency through one or more of the following:

Degree Equivalence: Possess a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the discipline, where the degree title or coursework differs slightly
Academic Background Equivalence: For disciplines where a Master’s is not generally expected or available, complete at least 24 semester units (or equivalent) in the academic field, including:
- A broad cultural education (e.g., general education requirements for a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree)
- A detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor (e.g., coursework required for the degree major)
Professional Achievement Equivalence: Submit evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the field, including:
- Preparation, teaching experience, work experience, publications, portfolios, speaking engagements, or other relevant abilities

Understanding and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college
Use and development of teaching methods emphasizing cooperation, collaboration, and active student engagement
Ability to organize and explain materials for students with varying abilities, preparation levels, and cultural experiences
Development of instructional learning outcomes and assessment methods
Organization and teaching of theoretical and practical applications appropriate to students’ abilities
Commitment to established academic standards and the integration of writing skills across the curriculum
College-level knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
- Introduction to Sociology
- Social Problems
- Understanding Diverse Racial/Ethnic Cultures
Recent successful experience in teaching or preparation to teach in the discipline
Use of technology in teaching

Typical on-site office environment; in-person work expected with potential telework participation
Frequent hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and online
Comprehend speech at normal levels
Upper limb dexterity to operate computers and peripheral equipment
Vision sufficient for daily and frequent use of computers, databases, and written materials
Sitting for extended periods
Frequent bending at the waist
Physical presence at on-site locations
Communication and interaction with others
Observation and interpretation of people and situations
Learning and applying new information or skills
Performing highly detailed work on multiple concurrent tasks

Position is designated as a Mandated Reporter under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.

Participation in the State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS), a defined-benefit retirement plan through the State of California, or choice of STRS Cash Balance program or Social Security
