About the role

The Theatre Department invites applications for part-time teaching appointments in Musical Theatre. Applicants should possess a strong background in musical theatre, music directing & accompaniment, and a knowledge of the musical theatre canon. Class teaching opportunities include vocal coaching, repertoire development, and auditioning. Music Director opportunities are available, with duties that include serving as a Vocal Coach-Accompanist in Musical Theatre courses and rehearsals, and may include serving as Conductor in the band.

Requirements

  • A terminal degree (MFA, MM, DM/DMA) in Musical Theatre or a closely related field, or a BFA/BT/BM/MA with significant professional experience.
  • Teaching experience at the college or university level.
  • Demonstrated experience in accompanying/teaching/coaching with strong sight-reading skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in conducting instrumentalists and vocalists.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of repertoire and styles of music theatre (including pop, rock, country, and rap/spoken word).
  • Demonstrated professional experience as a Music Director for musical theatre.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and representation in both classroom and production environments.
  • Direction or Performance in musical theater productions.
  • Curricular development and/or programmatic growth.

Benefits

Compensation is based on qualifications and experience. As a member of the 23-campus CSU System, we offer an extremely competitive benefits package. Newly hired lecturers with terminal degrees are placed in Range 3 of the salary schedule and others are normally placed in Range 2. Starting salaries are usually at or near the minimum of the range. The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated in the schedules are prorated based on the number of units assigned and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
