Part-Time Faculty: Writing and Composition Program Instructor, English

Fordham University’s English Department invites applications for part-time Non-Tenure Track (NTT) faculty to teach in its first-year Writing & Composition Program on a rolling basis.

About the role

Successful candidates may be offered up to two sections per semester of either Composition II—a required Core course focused on rhetorical inquiry and research-based writing—or Composition I, which builds college-level writing skills through attention to writing process, rhetorical reading, and critical language awareness. Courses are capped at 16 students to support cura personalis, the Jesuit principle of care for the whole person.

We seek instructors familiar with current, research-based best practices in college writing pedagogy, especially inclusive and antiracist approaches, and who can foster equitable teaching and learning environments aligned with Fordham’s Jesuit mission and strategic plan for racial justice.

Part-time NTT instructors are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), with minimum per-course rates set by the Adjunct Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. The per-course rate for new instructors is $7,950 as of August 1, 2023.

Teaching assignments may be at either or both of Fordham’s main campuses: Rose Hill (Bronx) or Lincoln Center (Manhattan). Rose Hill has the larger student body and typically greater staffing needs; preference may be given to candidates open to teaching there.

Occasionally, part-time NTT faculty may also teach “Texts and Contexts,” a Core introduction to literary studies, or Advanced Literature Core electives. Candidates interested in literature courses should submit tailored materials via Interfolio.

Responsibilities

• Teach up to two sections per semester of first-year writing courses (Composition I or II).
• Apply research-based, inclusive, and antiracist pedagogies to create equitable learning environments.
• Engage students in rhetorical inquiry, research-based writing, revision, peer review, and individual conferencing.
• Support Fordham’s Jesuit mission and commitment to racial justice through course content and teaching practice.

Requirements

• Terminal degree (PhD or MFA) in hand.
• Minimum of one year teaching first-year writing at the college or university level.
• Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students.
• Demonstrated commitment to student-centered best practices in writing instruction.

Pay
