Part-Time Instructor position for DPS 140-546 Applied Music – Double Bass Lessons (Jazz/Commercial) during the Fall and Spring semesters of the 2026-2027 academic year.

The Setnor School of Music is part of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. Responsibilities

  • Provide weekly private instruction in jazz performance techniques, including jazz styles, jazz music reading, jazz improvisational techniques, and combo/large ensemble performance skills.
  • Set up and maintain a lesson schedule.
  • Attend jazz faculty orientation meeting and approximately three jazz faculty meetings per semester.
  • Collaborate to build and maintain the jazz/commercial bass studio.
  • Develop and/or update a class syllabus.
  • Prepare student assignments and maintain regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Present instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
  • Meet all designated class periods and participate in end-of-semester juries.
  • Participate in fall/spring audition days, including review of online jazz and commercial music audition materials for assigned prospective students.
  • Participate in performances with jazz and commercial music faculty as requested.
  • Submit completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
  • Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
  • Provide departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Build a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
  • Support student performances at major jazz & commercial music events where possible.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a master’s degree in music (jazz or commercial bass performance) or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience teaching studio electric bass/double bass at the collegiate level.
  • Jazz/Commercial Music Performance credentials.
  • Strong attention to detail and knowledge of course content.
  • Demonstrated pedagogical ability and the ability to relate well in a classroom and one-on-one environment with college-level students.

Preference will be given to applicants who could potentially fulfill multiple positions within the Setnor School of Music.
