Part-Time Faculty: BDJ 312: Audio and Digital News Writing, Reporting and Producing (Fall 2026)

Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications is seeking an instructor for BDJ 312 Audio and Digital News Writing, Reporting and Producing during the Fall 2026 semester (3 credits). The course meets Tuesdays 12:30–2:30 pm and Thursdays 12:30–3:30 pm.

About the role

This course is the students’ first class devoted to reporting and uses audio as its principal technology. The class includes field experiences, and students produce a weekly radio newscast in the school’s production laboratories. Students also learn to write web stories and use social media to report. Instructors are expected to provide substantive, timely feedback so students can apply it to subsequent assignments and productions.

Responsibilities

• Develop a syllabus and order required books and materials before the first day of classes.
• Prepare for and instruct scheduled class sessions.
• Hold weekly office hours to meet with students.
• Grade assignments and examinations in a timely manner.
• Submit mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
• Significant professional experience as a working broadcast journalist.
• Documented news writing and reporting experience and capabilities.
• Up-to-date knowledge of rapid changes in newsrooms and the use of new media in news.
• Ability to demonstrate thoughtful consideration of future directions in journalism.
• Previous college or university teaching experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to instruct the class during scheduled meeting times.
• Ability to hold office hours on campus.
• Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.

Tools & Equipment

• Operate standard classroom instructional technology, including computer, projector, and document camera.
