Under the guidance of a supervisor, the Park Attendant will monitor the use of City parks and golf courses, enforce ordinances and park rules, provide surveillance and security, and perform light maintenance to ensure the safety of park users and citizens.
Responsibilities
- Patrol recreation areas on foot and/or by vehicle to monitor users' activities and maintain a safe and secure environment.
- Enforce City of Birmingham ordinances, established park rules and regulations, park permit requirements, and departmental policies governing City parks and recreational areas.
- Verify shelter reservations against the City's online reservation system (name, date, time, group size).
- Monitor tennis courts to ensure only reservation holders use reserved courts, redirecting walk-ups.
- Resolve reservation conflicts/disputes and escalate to supervisor when needed.
- Communicate effectively, including:
- Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Prepare and respond to email, text messaging, and other communication methods as appropriate.
- Prepare and maintain written records and reports.
- Develop and maintain a good working relationship with the public, including providing information regarding recreational areas and specific points of interest.
- Offer friendly assistance to park users and ensure they have a positive experience.
- Operate a two-wheel vehicle.
- Perform light maintenance including:
- Cleaning and locking and unlocking of facilities.
- Inspect temporary restrooms: check cleanliness, damage, and supply levels, and report servicing needs to supervisor.
- Open and close parks. Set up and take down equipment.
- Notify full-time staff and/or Police Department in case of problems and/or emergencies.
- Additional related responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent, preferably supplemented with college-level coursework in Criminal Justice and/or Law Enforcement.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and a reliable vehicle for transportation between locations. Mileage is reimbursed.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
- Valid American Red Cross CPR certification preferred.
